Project Engineer (Electrical) (13294)

 

The Project Engineer (Electrical) plays a key role in the delivery of wastewater infrastructure projects in including pumping stations, treatment works, electrical installations, ICA systems, power supplies, and network improvements, project value £1m - £30m.

This role requires strong hands-on electrical engineering experience within the wastewater sector, with responsibility for coordinating all electrical and ICA engineering activities from pre-contract development through to installation, commissioning, and handover.

You will ensure technical compliance, commercial alignment, quality engineering outcomes, and effective integration with civil, mechanical, and process disciplines. The role demands strong organisation, attention to detail, proactive problem-solving, and the ability to maintain progress across multiple work fronts both on and off site.

Hybrid working is available, with travel to sites and the Exeter office when required.

 

Key Responsibilities

Electrical & ICA Engineering Delivery

Provide electrical and ICA engineering input across all project stages—feasibility, outline design, detailed design, procurement, delivery, commissioning, and handover.

Review and interpret electrical design drawings, schematics, single-line diagrams, control philosophies, I/O schedules, panel drawings, and supplier documentation.

Ensure electrical systems are fully compliant with specifications, client standards, statutory regulations, and industry best practice.

Oversee the coordination and integration of LV power, MCCs, PLC/SCADA systems, instrumentation, telemetry, and earthing systems within the wider treatment works.

Ensure constructability, access, maintainability, and safe operation are considered throughout design and delivery.

Pre-Construction & Procurement

Support the preparation of electrical technical submissions and responses to supplier and client clarifications.

Work closely with the commercial team to procure all electrical and ICA elements, including switchgear, MCCs, control panels, instrumentation, cabling, and specialist subcontract packages.

Review and technically approve supplier designs, FAT documentation, and quality plans.

Ensure compliance with company quality management systems and electrical assurance processes during design and procurement phases.

Construction, Installation & Commissioning

Provide day-to-day electrical engineering support to the Site Manager, Site Agent, and delivery teams.

Support planning, sequencing, and coordination of electrical installation activities on site.

Monitor progress, labour, and materials associated with electrical and ICA works and support reporting requirements.

Attend and support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), inspections, and commissioning activities.

Support the development and execution of commissioning plans, ensuring systems are tested safely, systematically, and in line with client requirements.

Assist with fault finding, system integration issues, and resolution of technical non-conformances.

Coordination, Communication & Stakeholder Management

Liaise closely with civil, mechanical, process, and commissioning teams to ensure electrical systems interface correctly.

Attend and contribute to internal and external design reviews, progress meetings, and coordination workshops.

Support monthly project reviews and subcontractor performance reviews with site management.

Represent the business professionally when engaging with clients, designers, suppliers, and regulatory stakeholders.

Technical Compliance, Safety & Quality

Ensure adherence to Health, Safety & Environmental standards and promote Safe by Design principles.

Maintain compliance with WIMES, Water Authority standards, BS 7671, BS EN standards, CDM regulations, and other relevant electrical legislation.

Support the development and review of risk assessments, method statements, permits, and lock-out/tag-out procedures.

Maintain accurate project records, including electrical test results, commissioning records, red-line drawings, and O&M documentation.

Team Culture & Continuous Improvement

Contribute to a positive and collaborative project team environment.

Support and mentor junior engineers and graduates where required.

Promote Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), standardisation, digital engineering, and efficiency improvements within electrical and ICA work packages.

 

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential

HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or equivalent.

Minimum 5 years’ experience in electrical engineering within the water or wastewater sector.

CSCS card (appropriate level).

SSSTS minimum (SMSTS preferred).

Strong understanding of electrical, ICA, mechanical, and civil interfaces within wastewater infrastructure.

Experience in both pre-construction and site-based electrical delivery.

Knowledge of LV power systems, MCCs, PLC/SCADA systems, instrumentation, and commissioning processes.

Commercial awareness with the ability to support cost management and subcontractor performance.

Experience working under NEC contracts.

Strong IT skills and ability to use project and quality management systems.

Clear communicator with the ability to work effectively with site teams, designers, and clients.

 

Desirable

Experience with MMC, offsite manufacture, and modular electrical solutions.

Knowledge of BIM, digital engineering tools, and 3D model coordination.

18th Edition (BS 7671).

First Aid at Work.

Experience working on AMP water frameworks.

Experience attending FATs, SATs, and electrical assurance audits.
